SnackTime With Jen: Scones, August 21st

I finally made it down to the famous Mary O’s on 7th Street in the East Village. They are only open Thursday through Sunday from 7am to 1pm or when they sell out and this shop could not be further or more diagonal from my apartment on the Upper West Side. But I knew one bite of their special scone would be worth the trip. So I pilgrimaged on two trains and lots of steps to wait on the thankfully short line to try one. This was the perfect Fast Food Friday as it was grab and go.

The inside has no A/C (horror) but fans were blowing up a storm and the furnishings were so cute with coffee cup decorations and wooden tables and chairs. I was close enough to overhear the cashier (Mary O’s son) being so nice and taking care with each guest despite the heat.

After a quick five minutes on line spent observing Mary baking new batches, and filling order after order, it was my turn. Not a big menu– only one thing to get so I proudly requested my Irish Soda Bread Scone with the homemade blackberry jam and Irish butter, anxious to feel the magic.

Well, let me just tell you… wow! The crumb on the scone was absolutely perfect. The slightly crispy outside was a wonderful complement to the soft, pillowy insides. And the river of melty butter coupled with the scoop of sweet blackberry jam was insane. This was one of the best treats I’ve ever had, and certainly the best scone.

The combo of sweet dough, salty butter and acidic jam was a trifecta of pastry perfection. All, hail Mary!

Jen’s Little Black Book loves a tasty treat and the scones at Mary O’s are guaranteed to kick off your morning with an ooh ahh and smile. Happy Friday!
