SnackTime With Jen: Bread Furst, October 31st

While in Washington DC, I hit another fab spot for a to go order. Mark Furstenberg’s Bread Furst bakery and market in the Van Ness neighborhood was my pick. Mark is an old bakery veteran around those parts and I thought it was a sure bet that his snacks and treats would be all world.

Just before I got there a clan of cyclists clad in their tight fitting matching outfits and cleats stomped in before me to wait on the line that snaked almost to the front door. So while they chatted, I browsed the windows, cases and offerings. The bread looked incredible and the Schnecken had me at hello! But I was just looking for a quickie meal and to tote home two portable snacks that my tiny luggage could easily manage.

Of course they had various versions of the incredible French butter I love, and cheeses on cheeses on cheeses in the dairy case, in addition to ceramics and homegoods.

When it was finally my turn to order, I saw the fun bagel sandos and opted for the Nova Lox Bagel with peppery arugula, cream cheese and pickled red onions. I enjoyed an outdoor table and dove into my breakfast snack. And coming from a hard core New Yorker, yes, this bagel was just a snack. Why? Because it was certainly a suitable portion, but about half the size of a New York bagel that I’m used to ordering and enjoying for two meals!

Making it into the go bag I picked the fabulous looking Chocolate Graham Crackers and their signature Baguette Chips. The Grahams were the standout here. They were crisp, chocolately, and had a touch of salt. Outstanding! And the Baguette Chips were crunchy but needed a little savory topper. So at home I’ve tried them with a dollop of cream cheese and homemade dip and they certainly paired perfectly.

Jen’s Little Black Book just loves a travel meal from a local shop that’s worth the wait and lives up to the hype. If you find yourself in Washington DC anytime soon, hit up Bread Furst, but don’t be surprised if you’re immediately craving seconds!
