SnackTime With Jen: West Coast Bakery Break, October 9th

On a recent trip during the heatwave in San Diego I had the pleasure of sharing breakfast with a dear friend. Always up for a tasty snack, Margie was game to follow my lead and check out Relic Bakery & Kitchen, a place I had never been. I had my fingers crossed that it would be exceptional but was hoping for good.

It was a quick ride from our conference hotel and the minute we walked in, the bakery case was calling our names with astonishingly tempting choices! From sweet to savory options, filled croissants and loaded buns, this spot hit all the bakery high notes and we couldn’t wait to try our faves.

I ordered off the menu and opted for an omelette on a croissant with a relish filling and peppery arugula. I also had a go-box filled with the Chili Dog Croissant, a Dark Chocolate Chip Cookie and their Double Chocolate Croissant to sample later.

Margie wanted to try both Cinnamon Buns– one with a whipped cream cheese topper and one braided with huge sugar crystals, and a Maple Glazed Kougin Amann and I promised I would sample her picks and weigh in.

Needless to say we had an all out party! My breakfast sando was amazing. I loved the veggie insides and the croissant was wonderfully buttery and crisp. And all of her snacks were top shelf. She favored the braided cin roll and I loved the frosted one. But the Maple KA was to die! So crispy yet soft and fluffy. We liked that one best.

Hours later back in the room I had to try the Croissant Dog. I wasn’t a huge fan of the chili, but again the croissant itself was shatteringly good and the dog was delish. The Double Chocolate Croissant was super chocolatey with spiky shards of crispy dough. Yum. And the Cookie was softer than I expected but the rich dark chips were excellent.

There’s nothing like trying out a new place and being overwhelmed by the delicious choices! Jen’s Little Black Book loves a good bakery and Relic offers so many spectacular options. If you find yourself in San Diego anytime soon, check out the snacks at Relic and make sure you’re prepared to sample more than a few. Enjoy
