It’s In The Bag, October 5th

I can’t tell you exactly why I get excited about a new handbag. It must be wired into my DNA. The Mothership also goes crazy for a terrific new purse. My favorite fashion quote concerning women’s satchels is, “If you don’t think a Birkin can solve all your problems, you probably didn’t score a leather appointment in Paris.” I think this is sort of (gasp!) true. Last year in France, sure I wouldn’t get into the handbag lottery, shock and awe ensued when I did. And then of course I had no plans to plunk down $$$$ for said quota bag. But I did that too!

So I know “The first casualty in every battle is the plan.” And going into fashion battle I can tell you that I have experienced “casualties of store” first hand. And they were spectacular.

I’m not sure what the little birdie on your shoulder tells you when you are at the precipice of a big decision (home, electronic gadget, grill, TV, car, boat, toy, jewels, trip, bag) but on one of my shoulders is the voice of my Mom saying buy it! You deserve it. And on the other is my friend Tracey who not only tells me to buy it, but she asks if it comes in black for her! So basically it’s like having a chorus of rabid raccoons dictating my spend power. How lucky am I??

Sometimes I think of handbags as investment pieces because it’s a great way to justify the purchases. I once tripled my money on a wallet on a chain bag! That was impressive after 20 years of gentle wear. But the truth is that it’s stunningly scary that the price of that bag went up 164%. Ouch.

I sometimes consider it a special occasion when I have a visceral reaction to a particular bag. And then due to that specific reaction, I decide that it’s meant to be! And I declare it a bag holiday. So the purchase is allowed. Besides, different bags are for different things. I’d never carry a clutch to the grocery store or a tote to a wedding. Please! We all need a few in our closet.

And although handbag shopping can be addictive, I swear I can quit anytime I want… said no woman ever.

Plus, research shows that bag owners are happy!

And it’s so important to surround yourself with people who get you and understand your passions, motivations and drivers. Especially when it comes to accessories.

Instead of questioning my natural inclinations, I try to lean into them and be accepting of myself and my strengths and weaknesses. For instance I have good taste and consider this a strength. However I don’t always have willpower, so yes, this is a challenge I can work on.

You didn’t think I’d leave out matching shoes for the fab bags did you? C’mon. You know me better than that!! xoxo
