SnackTime With Jen— You Win Son, October 8th

I finally made it to the Manhattan branch of Win Son Bakery, a Taiwanese favorite in the East Village I had been drooling to try. Known for their Bacon, Egg and Cheese combo on a Scallion Pancake with garlic aioli dipping sauce, Win Son is famed too for their block long lines.

So on a nondescript Tuesday, we popped down to do a bit of a taste testing day and Win Son was up first. Although the menu was pretty comprehensive with breakfast, lunch, and dinner, spirits, wine and beer, I was laser focused on this one particular sando at this all day cafe.

After ordering at the counter and securing a bright window seat, we waited impatiently for our breakfast of champions to arrive. And wow it did not disappoint. First of all this sandwich is heavy and huge! Our one giant griddled wrap was cut in half and was unexpectedly a sharable portion two hungry adults could enjoy. (Kraft Mac & Cheese gives you less food in a whole box and that’s supposed to feed a family of four!) With oozing melty cheese, lots of crispy bacon, and hotter than your mouth can handle scrambled eggs, this dreamy handheld slaps. And the aioli on the side is a must. My only issue was the tiny but tall sauce container? It was easier to go in with a knife and spread a bit of the garlicky goodness at the site of my intended next bite instead of trying to find a corner of the sando that would fit in that micro ramekin. Regardless, this hot pocket was dip compatible, delicious, decadent, and divine.

Just take a look at this inside oozing out shot of the generous cheese. You can almost taste that cripsy bacon, too. Oh, man!

This represents the remains of the day post breakfast. I am now an official member of the clean plate club, a distinction I certainly earned.

Win Son Bakery is a dream. If you’re looking for a scrumptious, quick, swoon-worthy breakfast, their BAC on a scallion pancake takes the bodega staple and elevates it with their unique, oniony crisp wrapper and sidecar of sauce. Jen’s Little Black Book loves a restaurant that can transform an old favorite into something fresh and memorable. Taste testing can be hit or miss– you win some, you lose some. But at this East Village spot, it’s a big Win.

Everyone I know just loooves a little snack. Especially me.
