Churning out spectacular pastries on the regular is a tall order. But there is a fabulous bakery nestled in Chelsea that is doing just that. Tall Poppy is a serious favorite for neighborhood locals and a delicious destination for foodies from all over. My first visit was months ago and I skated in just before closing so the pickins were limited but great. So I vowed that upon my return, I’d order in advance to make sure I scored the house sellouts. And did I ever…

I pre-ordered a custom four pack and chose the Spanakopita Bun, Eggs Benedict Croissant, an Everything Cruffin and a Gluten Free Carrot Muffin.

I’ll start with the largest item first. This Spanakopita Bun was gigantic. I needed two hands just to pick the dang thing up. If you picture a cinnamon roll that has defected to the savory side, that’s the gist here. Laced with spinach, it could feed a family of four with its crispy outsides and green swirled center.

The next item was the Everything Cruffin– A dense pastry with incredibly delicate outsides covered in salty sesame seeds and everything spices. The inside was stuffed and overflowing with a heavenly smooth chive cream cheese that complemented every bite of this muffin like delicacy.

The Eggs Benedict Croissant was a wonder! I’ll never quite grasp the cooktime to achieve the perfect jammy egg hiding inside this astonishingly crispy breakfast shell, but they nailed it. The hollandaise on top was perfection and a cross section bite is what the whole morning should be about with just a nibble of the bacon strip tucked into the base layer. Wow.

My favorite of the four was the Gluten Free Carrot Muffin. You would never know this rich, breakfast dessert was missing anything. The cakey insides were nutty, moist and spongy and the wonderfully sweet frosting was bomb. I loved the spray of crunchy sugared nuts on top to add just a little texture to this larger than life sharable snack.

Well now I am hungry!
