Welcome to SnackTime With Jen. This midweek morsel is a small taste of something fun. Topics range from food (of course) to fashion, amusing little discoveries both locally and abroad, and a variety of interesting intel too tempting not to share. So let’s get snacking…

Recently I stood in line to order takeout from a kiosk at a food hall that is all food and no hall. You literally stand outside and wait your turn to tap your order onto a screen. Perhaps you’ve heard about the gone viral chicken place, Birdbox? They sell the crazy chicken that has the claw still attached. I kid you not. Their schtick is that they source whole chickens with heads and feet intact, showing an indicator of quality and they pass along that proof to you. (Ummm, thanks?) Birdbox serves their Claude The Claw either in a sandwich or in a box, sans bread. The concept is a little scary to be honest. The claws are indeed out!

After a hefty 45 minute wait including a late start due to a technology glitch at the ONE dedicated kiosk, the slow moving mass of eighteen ahead of me inched forward post opening bell. When it was finally my turn, I was in sticker shock from the clucking high price of these two items. Wow. (MY claws were out!) Ten minutes later, prize finally in hand, I skipped away with a Birdbox that housed a combo Claude sando and fries. The three tables out front really service the coffee bar located on the ground floor so I flew home, not giving my meal the chance to cool off.

The box opening was a bit intimidating but I jumped right in. I snapped off the claw and peeked under the bun to find a good smattering of pickles, and mess of slaw atop a skin on fried chicken leg (thigh + drum) piled high on a potato bun with yeayo sauce. The waffle fries looked great so the ketchup sat untouched.

I wasted no time taking a big bite of that heavy sandwich. Yum! The chicken was perfectly fried, super juicy, and the crust was hearty, audibly crunchy and savory. The slaw/pickle combo added just the right cool acid to the heat and spice of the chicken. The sesame seed bun was tender and squishy but started to fall apart from the sheer weight and temperature of the chicken. It was bigly! The fries were hot, seasoned, crispy, and delicious. I got through less than half of the sandwich and a few of the fries before I waved a white napkin in surrender. The portion was just so large– take note: two can comfortably share this bawker.
