If you’ve been to the famous Borough Market in London, you know it’s an enormous maze of fabulous food stalls with everything from fish and chips to produce, wine, meatballs, candy, tacos, charcuterie, cheese, rotisserie, meze, and so much more. One of their most popular “traders” is called Turnips. Turnips started selling the now viral cups of gorgeous plump strawberries coated generously in a glossy milk chocolate sauce. But since London is geographically undesirable for a quickie snack if you’re stateside, our friends at Chocolate On Tap have hooked us up right here in NYC.
When I heard their traveling food stand was going to be in Union Square on a random Thursday afternoon in July, I hurried downtown right after work to line up for some chocolate covered fruity paradise. Their process isn’t exactly like the Brits, and on the day I visited, they didn’t use a chocolate spout. Instead they wielded a gigantic spatula to drizzle, swipe, and coat the tender berries. They started with a half filled cup of strawbs, put a heap of chocolate in the middle of the fruit pile, layered on more plump bites, and finished it off with a gigantic gloopy pile of warm chocolate. Wow.
The result was a runaway hit! The fruit was perfectly in season, ripe and juicy. The chocolate was melty and sweet. And the combo hit just right for a hot summer day.
They don’t believe in lids, so if it’s just you, I doubt you’ll be able to finish the definitely shareable portion of scrumptiousness. But hey, go for it. No judgement!
