Welcome to my newest feature, SnackTime With Jen. This midweek morsel is a small taste of something fun. Topics range from food (of course) to fashion, amusing little discoveries both locally and abroad, and a variety of interesting intel too tempting not to share. So let’s get snacking…

On a recent work trip to San Francisco, I ventured into the Ferry Building perched right on the SF Bay to sample the famous eats at Hog Island Oyster Co. Obviously famous for their oyster dishes– fresh, grilled, fried, with Siracha, Butter and Garlic, or Chipotle Bourbon, I’m guessing not many folks take a gander at the right side of the menu which quietly features the best-you’ve-ever-had Mussels. But since you all know I’m a hard-core foodie, I did it… I went there.

After a twenty-minute wait in the gorgeous California sun, we scored an outdoor table and had the benefit of the incredible Blue Angels performing aerial tricks right over our heads while we settled in! Does it get any better? Oh yes. The waiter didn’t even flinch when I ordered the Mussels with a side of fries but instead gave me a knowing wink. Bathed in a broth of basil, parmesan cheese, sauteed onions, lemon, butter, white wine, and garlic, this generous bowl came at me hot and I didn’t even know what hit me.

Without a doubt these were the best mussels I’ve ever tasted. The open shells boasted big meaty bellies and the broth really wasn’t broth at all. Instead it was more like a thick, herby stock with a wonderfully substantial mouthfeel, super buttery, and garlic forward… Almost like a basil butter pesto. Beyond!

No muscle was required to pry these suckers open and I was giddy to dunk each one into the rich liquid for a little swim before completely tossing all the fries into the pool, too. Who doesn’t love a little basil stock clinging deliciously to warm, crispy potato sticks? Yum.

Hog Island is a scenic spot and a must visit if you find yourself in the Bay area. I can’t guarantee that the Blue Angels will be performing while you dine, but you won’t care as the main attraction is definitely plateside where Hog Island totally flexes her Mussels. Jen’s Little Black Book is happy to add this San Francisco treat to the best of roster.
