Federal Donuts has been on my must visit list for years so I’m happy to say that I finally had my day in Federal. This Philly favorite is known for their completely addictive donuts that keep fans coming back. The crowds mix up their dozen with Fancy– glazed and decorated, Hot Fresh– fried to order and tossed in flavored sugars, and Classic. They also serve twice-fried super crispy chicken with savory dipping sauces. Basically this place has my name written alllll over it.
If you order Three Chicken Fingers they come with a Hot donut on the side. (How awesome is that??) This would have been good to know BEFORE I ordered an additional donut on the side, but ok. The freebie sidecar during my visit was the Cinnamon Brown Sugar. It was fried on the spot and had the most tender, warm, incredibly moist insides ever. The chicken fingers were tasty, almost as if they had been dipped into a savory funnel cake batter and fried till crisp. The ranch sauce was a great complement. (But when is ranch not the go to sauce, right??)
My other Fresh Hot was a flavor of the day, Strawberry Lavender. And let me just tell you, I was blown away. How do they achieve maximum sugary strawberry outsides that actually stick to the lush super moist cake?? The Strawberry was equally superb with a fragrant crunchy bite and the same plump and pillowy warm insides. Both donuts were so overwhelmingly good that I needed to sit down to manage the sugar rush.
If you’re a PA resident and don’t visit Federal Donuts on a regular basis, shame on you. It should be a capital crime! Jen’s Little Black Book finds in favor of Federal Donuts. Get ’em while they’re hot!
