SnackTime With Jen— A Mighty Good Breakfast, August 2nd

Welcome to my newest feature, SnackTime With Jen. This midweek morsel is a small taste of something fun. Topics range from food (of course) to fashion, amusing little discoveries both locally and abroad, and a variety of interesting intel too tempting not to share. So let’s get snacking…

In New York City, a bacon, egg and cheese sandwich (BEC) is part of the breakfast culture. When you order one in any corner deli or well-known bodega, the counter person will ask only one question: “Salt/Pepper/Ketchup?” You’re on your own with your answer… I’m a pepper gal myself. But if you venture slightly south to the City of Brotherly Love, head straight to Mighty Bread in South Philly for their version of an outstanding BEC. They start with squishy sweet potato brioche and add soft scrambled eggs, melty sharp white cheddar, a pile of fresh arugula, and a sweet pepper relish they call peperonata that adds a tangy little zip to an already spectacular handheld. Opt into the crispy bacon as a middle layer and you have yourself one hell of a way to start the day.

If you’re looking for a sweet treat after your savory sando, order the perfectly round, perfectly soft Rye Chocolate Chip Cookie with flaky sea salt. Yum! Looking to get a little messy? Indulge in the absolutely insane Almond Twice Baked Croissant dusted with powdered sugar, topped with crunchy clustered almonds, and filled with a sweet, runny almond filling. This snack is showstoppingly crispy but the gooey insides might present a croissant catastrophe if the nutty compote mounts an unprecedented escape. (Is the filling mightier than the pastry?) Be prepared for a weekend wardrobe smackdown. A word of caution… Don’t wear your Sunday best, for your shirt may be eating first.

Mighty Bread gives new meaning to the term power breakfast. Energized by these knockout morning munchies, I bet you’ll even consider an inspired climb up the famous “Rocky Balboa Steps.” I say go for it! Jen’s Little Black Book recognizes Mighty Bread as a true Philly champ.

I’m dishing it out each week in my newest feature, SnackTime With Jen cause everyone I know just loooves a little snack. Especially me.
