SnackTime With Jen— Nuclear Sub, June 21st

Welcome to my newest feature, SnackTime With Jen. This midweek morsel is a small taste of something fun. Topics range from food (of course) to fashion, amusing little discoveries both locally and abroad, and a variety of interesting intel too tempting not to share. So let’s get snacking…

On a recent visit to Atlantic City for The 2023 Mid-Atlantic Regional Symposium, I had the good fortune to dine with my great pal, Marc Ross. Marc let me torpedo our 14th annual lunchtime pilgrimage to White House Sub Shop (our longtime favorite haunt) to try an over-the-top sando at Tony Baloney’s and holy mother of submarines, they’re serving some substantial sustenance here.

The menu is huge and descriptive with lots of insane combos that blow up your view of traditional hoagies. With hilarious titles like Da Ruler, the Crabby Chicken Killer, and the Flying Guillotine, I carefully studied the fleet of possibilities and decided on the Thundercat.

This particular warship had a potato chip crusted fried chicken cutlet, salted ricotta, fresh mozzarella, and crispy onion hoisted onto a warm seeded hero roll with an obscene slather of 80s style creamed spinach. And it was so much better than your wildest sandwich fantasy! The chicken was so tender and moist. The cheese was super fresh and the ladles of creamy spinach sauce were just garlicky enough to propel this epic handheld into obviously tricky tabletop territory by creating ballistic breath bedlam amongst friends. I knife and forked my way through our sloppy sharable so as not to ruin my conference attire, but Marc took the plunge and bit right into his half. (He’s such a gambler!) Needless to say, our lunch was a big win.

Some traditions are meant to be updated. And although at White House I’m still a Turkey/Provolone lover and Marc remains a Cheesesteak purist (you never bet against the “House”) Tony’s sandwich game really ups the ante. Jen’s Little Black Book is doubling down on the temptingly addictive subs at Tony Baloney’s. (If you or someone you love has a serious sandwich problem, seek help immediately. Let Tony’s feed your need!)

I’m dishing it out each week in my newest feature, SnackTime With Jen cause everyone I know just loooves a little snack. Especially me.
