I wrote a blog a while back about how I completely overdosed on hot Krispy Kreme Glazed Doughnuts in college and haven’t touched one of those addictively puffy suckers since. (It was a true story that appeared in my post Endless Love on April 14th.) Well… it’s time for an update. I read recently that Krispy Kreme was rolling out a limited-edition Strawberry Glazed Doughnut and another filled with Strawberry Kreme. Ok, on the surface this doesn’t seem all that important to your average bear…. until you consider my sweet secret.

For those of you who know me personally, you know that I’m a complete chocoholic— this includes anyone who has ever dined with me or read even one of my posts. (I’m nowhere near the addict that Matty is or that my friend Paul is, but I’d say we’re talking DEFCON 3.) What you may not know is that I actually prefer a strawberry something to a chocolate colossus. (And if you refer back to my Endless Love post, you’ll note that the main picture spells the word “love” in none other than strawberries! Pretty sneaky, sis.) Yep, I’d pick strawberry shortcake over chocolate lava cake every day of the week– especially if it had fresh whipped cream, which is my total downfall. I used to order a Strawberry Fribble at Friendly’s and I love me some Strawberry Mentos! So the fact that Krispy Kreme Original Glazed revealed it had a sinister strawberry sister, well, the 30-year ban has been ceremoniously lifted and the gloves are now off– temporarily of course.

So I strategically scheduled a lunch near Times Square (a place I haven’t seen in over a year!) to make sure I could swing by to sample the reboot of this newfangled delicacy. After a great catch-up lunch with a friend, we walked the few blocks uptown. We waited on line for a few minutes in their extraordinary new store that’s open 24 hours to score two Strawberry Doughnuts– one Strawberry Kreme Filled and one Strawberry Glazed, and I can summarize the taste in one simple word: OHMYFUCKINGOD. I forced myself to zip it after we shared the two doughnuts.

Between the carbs and the sugar, I was high as a kite and loving every minute of the rush– I was practically disoriented. The doughnut outsides boasted a soft, glossy finish but the insides were warm, puffy and light. The Strawberry Kreme one was my favorite. Like a little bite of pillowy heavy with a sweet finish. All I can say is that I’m glad they are a limited time attraction because I’d be glazed and confused on a regular basis if they featured them as a regular menu item. (You can pop by today to pick up yours– May 6th is the final day for the strawberry promotion.) I’m happy to report that the ban is now back in place, so I hope the sweet memories last another 30 years.
