I have always been a purple fan. Growing up my bedroom had small lilac flowers on the wallpaper and my bedspread was all sorts of purple. Fast forward to my adult years and even though I’m a hard core New Yorker who favors black and blacker for my wardrobe, I proudly own a big purple couch who earned the name Barney for obvious reasons. Purple always seems to play a starring role in my home.

I remember selling my engagement ring once the divorce was final and all I wanted was a ring for that finger with a purple stone. I searched far and wide for something that represented that new phase in my life and voila! I landed on this chunky tanzanite beauty. I wore it on my left hand ring finger for years– partly as a deterrent as I did not wish to marry again, and partly as a jumping off point, because if I did change my mind and wanted to rebling later in life, that rock was to represent a sizing threshold for my intended. I was not messing around the second time should there be one.

On a trip to Italy many moons ago I visited an outlet outside of Florence. In the middle of nowhere, in a shopping warehouse far far away at a place called Space, I stumbled upon an on sale, one of a kind, purple python Prada purse. What are the chances? And I have to laugh because the odds of purple always seem to be in my favor. And nineteen years later, it’s still one of my favorite items of all time.

It’s no wonder that my birthstone is amethyst. And here’s what the stars say about my purple birth month…

I love the part about mystery and imagination, right? Many articles have been written about those who favor purple. There’s even a term for us– we are called porphyrophiles or lovers of purple.

So you’ll be surprised to know that purple isn’t real. Yep, you heard that right. Science tells us that the color purple does not even exist. (I think Oprah and Whoopi are gonna be soooo mad.) Let me let science explain…

So my mind is playing tricks on me to see and favor purple on a spectrum that I imagine? Wow. I guess I am super creative after all. Yay me. But no matter if it’s real or not, I love purple, lilac, eggplant, lavender, orchid, violet and even plum. Because beauty is in the eye of the beholder, I look at the world through purple colored glasses and that suits me and my pal Barney juuuust fine. So ask yourself today, who’s your purple?

I forwarded this to my mother, who resembles a lot of this, loves purple, loves amethysts, and was born in February! BTW I really wanted a purple sofa, but then we bought a carpet that needed blue rather than purple (I vetoed beige), but my office walls each have one purple wall per room – a very royal purple.
