Mad Hatter, September 29th

When I was growing up I loved ice skating. We used to go every single weekend, sometimes both days to Low Tor Ice Rink in Garnerville, New York. My Mom’s only rule about letting us skate was that we had to wear a hat. And I so loathed hats then because they were annoying and I felt too hot. But because she left us during the afternoon free skate session we had to use our own good judgement to either don the cap or chuck it while she wasn’t watching. I was not always an obedient child but in this case she scared the bejesus out of us saying that if we fell we could crack our heads open. So I wore the dang hat. I’m no dunce cap but I was a mad hatter.

Fast forward into adulthood and I’m a total hat person. Go figure. I wear them to cover grays, on bad hair days, for nasty windy weather, because I like the style, and sometimes even for warmth. And no logo’d baseball caps from my some rando sports team for this gal. Oh, no. More like leather driving hats, ultra furry caps, stylish wool fedoras, straw summer boaters, felt bowlers, colorful wool beanies, and fun patterned buckets. Newsboys and Panamas? Sure, why not.

I’m not really the fascinator type and I’ve never rocked a fez nor a pillbox. I don’t own a top hat either but I did come across a vintage one at the Saint-Ouen Flea Market in Paris. I was on the fence about the purchase as it would have just been for decorative purposes. Exactly. Cause as far as I know, I’m not running away to be the ringmaster in a three ring circus so it’s just not a wearable option. Plus it was so heavy. It was a pass.

I did have the good fortune of adding to my hat collection last year. I went a little crazy with Veronique at my favorite spot Headoniste. I got a driving cap in a neutral grainy fabric with a smart tan leather accent and a navy cashmere baseball cap. I just love her signature double snap at the back of the cap and the subtle logo. Both hats are so chic. And this year she had great spring styles so I leveled up with a cream linen cap and a mixed media cap. Love.

I had continued success at a designer outlet mall regarding their chapeaux selection and scooped up a fuzzy orange mohair baseball hat that was insanely discounted along with a navy cap that did bear the designer name across the back. A little brand forward but I liked it.

I was low key obsessed with up a denim hat that had slim side loops that let a Twilly slide right through. The cap fit so perfectly and didn’t break the bank like it’s leather counterpart cousin…. which I wanted in the worst way but thank goodness they didn’t have my size. Girl math says I saved so much money by buying the denim!

Hat styles are so varied and differ from season to reason. Even though I started out as a mad hatter, I’ve become a hat lover. And if you like hats as much as I do, well then my hat is off to you!
