Have You Heard? October 21st

Living in NYC and being surround by millions of people, it’s amazing the things you hear! And read. And observe. On this fine Monday morning, I thought I’d make your day more amusing with some things that have been “overheard” lately…

And isn’t it hard not to absolutely laugh out loud when you overhear something completely not meant for your ears? Like a child having a complete meltdown in a shoe store over the rainbow shoes that were not made in her size. Her solution? Five pairs of socks. And this girl was dead serious. A sales gal being chewed out by her boss for having nails too long to correctly work the cash register. So of course they weren’t too long for her to literally flip off her boss in front of a live audience! And then there’s the classic Macy’s interchange between an animated couple going at it over the particular variations of khaki. Can black pants also be considered “khaki pants” or is it truly just a “chino” style?? I had to save myself and walk away before they saw me and called for an innocent bystander’s expert opinion!

When we overhear something we shouldn’t there’s always the internal dialog going. Like how you had to sound out that sign above? And when you said it with a strong Boston accent and it clicked, you laughed, right? Yeah, me too. Hilarious! But we hope nobody will ever decrypt that thought bubble over our heads unless we decide to consciously share out loud. You know what I mean…

Restaurant commentary is a huge grey area of opinion. There is even a dedicated account to things overheard in Manhattan. And the culinary entries are so so funny!

Restaurants in general are a great forum for comedy. And here’s a great tip from a fellow diner completely fed up with her server…

Similar to the great tipper above, someone shared this amazing order…

Because when you’re just in a mood and you know what you need, it should be ok to ask for it, pickles included. But when you’re just not feeling very worky, is it ok to blurt out a clue as to how you’re feeling?

Sometimes you try to be nice to someone, only to have them misinterpret your actions. There was a touching scene in the TV show Will & Grace between the rich bitch Karen (the first true Karen!) and Jack, the dramatic gay best friend that went pear shaped quickly and was followed by a funny verbal assault. The conversation went something like this… Jack: “May a house fall on you!’ Karen: “Up yours, Dorothy.” Jack: “May you tan and freckle.” Ooooh. Good one, Jack! Then there’s this caring citizen who tried to help another driver to a karma driven conclusion…

Sometimes we all need a little help or guidance. Never was a shopper more honest in his request for retail clarity as this guy when he wrote the following. I feel you, Howard!

And sometimes you need to change course, dig your heels in and fight when the time is right. But pick your battles, Carrie.

Being a fly on the wall for an inappropriate conversation can make you uncomfortable. Remember the scene in the movie Ghost when Sam and Carl are in a packed elevator? To play a prank, Sam asks Carl what the doctor said about his recent rash. They quickly establish that’s it’s contagious just as Carl coughs out loud and steadies himself on the guy in front of him!

In a city of eight million people, someone is always around! So be careful if you don’t want to be overheard, quoted or written about. Say what you will, but know that the walls have ears and curious bystanders will undoubtedly have an opinion.
