Back In Black, October 30th

When considering my fall and winter wardrobe for the upcoming temperature dropping season, the only image I had in my head was of dark neutrals. In the vernacular of New York City, the direct translation is quite simple. It boils down to just one word. Black. I am back in black.

I mentioned in an earlier post this year that I was going through a wardrobe adjustment. That post, The Adjustment Bureau from October 2nd was just the start of my cold weather sprint. Now the deep dive into hueless darks has truly begun and I’m all about this shady fave.

I’ve stacked piles of black leggings that are ready to go. Neatly hung charcoal, obsidian, and raven-colored pants are front and center in my darkened bedroom closet. Black skirts have a cameo in knit and satin, and next to them sway onyx sweaters in several weights that have varying degrees of inkiness. A few new jet items in the outerwear category round out my midnight wardrobe.

Black has always been one of my favorite colors. It’s quiet. You can dress it up. It disappears yet makes a statement. It can be memorable or completely forgettable. Black is basic. Necessary. Foundational. Fundamental. Black is a starter. A black blazer can be considered an outfit. Black is the ultimate. When I’m shopping and I love something bright or colorful, I usually try to find it in black, too. Black has become my go-to. Black shows elegance, authority, power. Black commands attention. And lets you slip away.

Priests, judges, credit cards, and tuxedos all depend on black to make a statement. Black is ominous– black holes, blackouts, blackmail. Criminals and villains favor black, most notably Darth Vader and Dracula. But me? I just like it. I like the contrast to my skin. I like the deep richness of the color. I like the starkness of it. I like the boldness, too. I like how wearing black makes me feel.

For me, I guess black is the new black and I’m looking forward to inking my way through the next season and making quite an impression. And like the song says… once you go black, you never go back. Buy hey, check back with me in the spring when I could easily be having a rainbow moment!
