Endless Love, April 14th

When I attended college in Atlanta, we frequented a place in Buckhead called The Dessert Place. They were always packed because their baked goods, pastry treats, and sugary confections were super popular with absolutely everyone. My favorite menu item there was their sensational Cream Cheese Brownie. Those delectable squares were rich, fudgy and had a slight tang from the swirl of sweet cream cheese.

For my birthday my junior year, Nina, my big sister in my sorority, gifted me a huge box containing a dozen CCBs as they were then called. I was over the moon! She was so thoughtful and she really knew exactly what I liked. That first day I couldn’t wait to dive into one of those blissful brownies! By day two I was still excited to polish off a geometric goodie. When day three rolled around, I was not as thrilled, but managed to power through half of a sumptuous sweet. By day four I decided to freeze the rest of the box, feeling slightly ill at the very sight of one of those tasty cakes. Needless to say, not only did I not retrieve another one from our completely frozen over icebox, but I haven’t touched a Cream Cheese Brownie since. I completely maxed out. Permanently.

Sadly the same thing happened to me with Krispy Kreme Doughnuts. Too many “Hot Doughnuts Now” one night erased my ability to enjoy a glazed doughnut forever. I’m not even tempted when the usually mind-bending sign is illuminated. (I guess polishing off a whole dozen in under an hour my senior year wasn’t the best idea, although they were delicious at the time.)

The rejection is real.
In this case it’s not you… it really is me!

Why can’t this happen to me with french fries, bacon or sweet potato fries? Bagels, chicken wings or pizza?? (Bagel photo courtesy of New York Bagel.) Maybe there was something in the DeKalb County water that helped me ward off those delicious delights forever? I don’t know how else to explain it. Never again will I assume that love lasts forever when it comes to my foodie favorites. I’ll also try not to overdo it so that my tolerance need not be tested. Have no fear bacon– for now you’re safe and I am still very much in love.
